FAQs
Mattress and Pillow problems?
Every week patients ask us
- about the type of pillow, or mattress they need, or
- how do i know if my current pillow, mattress is worn out, or
- where do i go to check my sleep posture, or
- is it my bed or my back/neck that is the problem
Pillow and Mattress guidance is available for you. All of our chiropractors can assess your pillow, and give recommendations on type, style, materials and size. We can also demonstrate how to test your mattress, and what signs to look for when it is failing. This is the only professional service of its kind in Southern Tasmania. Naturally we cannot guarantee that sorting out your pillow and mattress will solve everything, as you may still need to have us help your back and neck.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
Typically NO. Many patients are referred to us by their GP, Specialists, and other Health Professionals. We like to work with your other Health professionals, so relevant information is appreciated.
No referral is needed for most patients with, or without Private Health, and MAIB. If you are a Veteran (DVA), EPC, we require a referral from your GP.
Can older people still have Chiropractic care?
Surprisingly over 50% of our patients are Seniors. They find that gentle chiropractic care improves their mobility, reduces pain, and lets them enjoy their grandkids, and being active.
Naturally we take things a bit gentler as our seniors get into their 70’s, 80’s and beyond. It is our job to work out how to help in the gentlest way possible given softer bones and arthritis.
Can I bring my Children or Baby to be Checked?
Children love chiropractic care, as it is typically comfortable and quick. Parents are grateful for assistance for a range of complaints (Mathew Doyle, March 2020 Pregnancy & Infants).
The Safer Care Victoria Investigation into Chiropractic Spinal Manipulation for Children(2019) had 22,000 responses to the online survey of which 99.7% described favourable results for chiropractic treatment.
There are a range of conditions that occur as a result of the birthing process, as well as the injuries
babies and children sustain as they grow and develop.
Problems we are asked to assess to determine if we can assist relate to a loss of mobility,
associated with pain( eg. stiff neck, difficulty turning, or bending ), difficulty feeding, and
asymmetrical development.
These complaints have a musculoskeletal-skeletal cause. If your baby or child has a complaint that
is not musculo-skeletal in nature, we will refer them to the appropriate health professionals.
As children grow they have lots of falls, injuries, sprains which are commonly seen by Chiropractors.
The methods used to help your baby or child are customised for their age, size, and condition.
Can you help me with Arthritis?
There are 200+ types of arthritis. Some are inflammatory, some are auto-immune, and some degenerative. The most common arthritis is degeneration, osteo-arthritis. This is present in most patients over 50.
Chiropractors approach arthritis in a wholistic way, typically helping patients with degenerative type arthritis. The methods used are focused around the research evidence which is about encouraging and re-gaining mobility both in-clinic and in the home. Chiropractors will often use gentle manipulative procedures as clinically appropriate as this restores mobility and gives relief.
It is important to ask your chiropractor whether chiropractic management can help you.
Does it hurt?
Chiropractors pride themselves on being gentle, and most adjustments are painless. Some methods can be uncomfortable, but this is sometimes necessary to achieve the desired result.
Do you provide supports, braces or orthotics?
We stock a range of braces for ankles, knees, low backs, elbows, wrists which we fit for our patients when they need them. We recognise that supports are usually a temporary measure to help overcome a complaint as part of the recovery process.
We provide semi-customised orthotics to correct leg length differences, and pronation (flat feet). These orthotic devices are inexpensive.
What is an adjustment?
This is the name that Chiropractors use to describe the specific manipulative treatment applied to subluxed joints. This can be in your spine, or shoulders, hips, knees, elbow, ankles and jaw. There are many types of adjustment , and your Chiropractor will advise which options are best for you. The range of adjustment styles we use include Gonsted, Diversified, SOT, Activator, Thompson, Drop, Logan, Toggle, NET, MET, ART.
Do I need to have treatment once the pain has gone?
Early in the recovery after an injury treatment is focused on reducing pain, and inflammation. As treatment continues and your pain is resolved, the focus shifts to restoring mobility, recovering the activities that you lost. This is followed by a period where stability is re-developed to create strength around the region to prevent recurrence.
Some patients find that they cannot fully recover, or their age means they seize up. These people find that having regular chiropractic care helps keep them going. This applies to our younger patients who have hard, heavy jobs, or those stuck at a desk all day or when you train hard a your sport. Ask your Chiropractor for advice.
Osteoparosis
Osteoparosis and osteopaenia are bone softening conditions. These conditions typically affect older people, especially females.
Chiropractors understand how to modify the care provided for people with these conditions so that they can assist with their aches and pains.
What if I am Pregnant?
Pregnant women enjoy visiting chiropractors for assistance with their sore backs. They enjoy being on special tables that allows them to lie down with no pressure on their baby.
Our Chiropractors have special techniques for assisting pregnant women. All of our Chiropractors have completed basic elements of the Webster method.
What is the Noise?
Some adjustment types produce a noise, like a clicking or popping. This noise is nitrogen gas inside the joint and is normal.
What is Subluxation?
This is the name that chiropractors use to describe the stiffness, impingement, locking, misalignment that occurs in spinal and other joints.
Different professions sometimes interprete this differently.
